Each year in the United States, over 50,000 children younger than 5 years old are hospitalized due to RSV infection. RSV can be dangerous for some infants and young children and can cause different respiratory illnesses. It most commonly causes a cold-like illness but can also cause serious lower respiratory infections like bronchiolitis and pneumonia (illnesses where the lungs get infected and inflamed).
